Chapter 5
Sex became something frequent between them. Rare was the day when he didnât have Alicia, when the two of them didnât bask in the afterglow of their lovemaking in each otherâs arms.
First weeks, then a couple of months, passed like that. They werenât as careful as they should. Sometimes Taylor used a condom, but many times he didnât, and neither of them seemed to care about it, there was even something like an added naughtiness to their acts when they made love without protection. More than once, Taylor imagined Alicia getting pregnant from their interactions, imagined the child the older woman would give him.
It was only a dream, he knew that. Alicia never had any children, which made him suspect she might not want or be able to have them. Certainly, if she could, she was taking precautions before coming to him.
Then, one day, he found her pacing inside of the living room when he returned home, realized Mia must have already been put to bed. For a moment, anger at his parents filled him. They were never home, his mother spent most of her time on business trips, his father worked until the early hours of the morning and barely saw his young daughter before she left for school, didnât see her for a moment after.
For the most part, he and Alicia were behaving as her parents, and it wasnât fair for any of them, no matter how much he loved Mia.
âThis thing between us needs to stop.â
He could only blink at his lover. âWhat?â
Alicia kept pacing, and her nerves were obvious. He wanted to move closer to her and pull her against his chest, comfort her, but she seemed to flinch when he approached, and he decided not to push the matter, still confused about the situation.
âI canât see you again, Taylor, not like this.â She refused to meet his eyes, her hands closing into fists. She seemed so hesitant, almost afraid, and he wanted to understand what was happening, what he could do to help, but she didnât give him a chance. âIâll still help take care of Mia, but nothing else. We need to stop this.â
She didnât give him a chance to try to argue, walked past him and out of the door, and Taylor was so startled by it all he didnât even try to stop her.
He didnât get the chance to talk to her over the following days, for the most part she was gone when he arrived, and the few times he arranged to come home earlier, she almost immediately left, and with Mia right there beside them it wasnât as if he could talk to the older woman about what was going on.
Many nights he spent awake, thinking about the matter, wondering what he had done wrong. Did he hurt her sometime? Did her husband find out and that was why she put a stop to it?
Taylor needed answers, and he wouldnât let Alicia avoid them forever.
The following day he came early and Alicia ran again.
